Text While Driving

I know I’m a freaking retarded driver when I try and do anything on my phone while on the move. If you think you’re some sort of magical multi-tasking wizard can I suggest trying out this game or reading any of the many studies that point out that texting and driving is suicidal. The sooner the machines start driving for us the better!

Twitter in “Real Time”

Article: When Will Twitter Really Go Real Time? And What Will Change When it Does?

In this case we’re talking about going from the current “check for new tweets 150 times an hour” to always having the latest tweets instantly.

Once Twitter turns into more of a chatroom, both Twitter’s website and third-party clients will also have to improve the way they display these conversations.

This doesn’t make sense to me. It seems like having live information would enhance the way twitter works now rather than change the focus of the entire platform. Twitter is nothing like a chat room and accurate access to the information there probably isn’t going to change that. I’m sure twitter will change over time, everything does, but stories like this one are complete bull.

The Tabs Problem?

Article: Fixing Tabs in Firefox: Design Challenge Winners Announced

Tab Design Challenge winners were recently announced by the Mozilla Labs team. I didn’t see anything amazing in the top picks, and the submissions lack a lot of polish.

Just what the tab problem is is a more interesting discussion. I don’t like the way tabs work at the moment yet the winners from the contest generally focused on ways to manage lots of tabs, or tab hierarchies. I’m all for simplification. I think that the real design challenge lies in encouraging less tabs and improving the experience of using those tabs. I’m going to explore this space a little more in the future.
